Systems Analyst / Application Developer – DR Swap
This role comprised of gathering and analysing dependencies on Woolworths applications environment and grouping servers based on dependencies.
The data collected aided the greater team to relocate a mixed (Windows/Linux/HP-UX) server fleet (400 servers) at Parramatta Data Centre with the then DR servers at Norwest Data Centre.Responsibilities
- Provide the greater team accurate up to date inventory data and server dependency mappings.
- Produce reports using the Mercury Application Mapping software (see achievements).
- Contact application vendors to gain further knowledge on their application and application which it may be communicating with.
- C# .Net/ Perl Development work to create the WOWAM (Woolworths Application Mapping Database) tool (see achievements).
Achievements
- The original application inventory tool purchased by Woolworth: Mercury Application Mapping (costing $1,000,000) failed to deliver, so I created our own project tool called WOWAM (Woolworths Application Mapping Database) to collect information from Windows, Linux and HP-UX servers for the project. This tool was instrumental in making the DR swap project successful, and is now being used in Woolworths latest acquisition in New Zealand: PEL. I created a set of scripts initially to pull the information from servers like TCP connections and services which later I developed an Application Inventory Database through my C# .Net skills which collated the necessary data into a central repository.
- Prior to this project Woolworths had no complete list of application existing out on the corporate network. Some critical applications were located on users workstations. This was identified and rectified.
- Successful grouping of servers based on dependencies on each other, so that the team could relocate (DR Swap) the group in one weekend and not affect any non-relocating server groups.
